Bare Sand Turtle Adventure
Bare Sand Island at the mouth of Bynoe Harbour is exactly that; bare sand. Well almost, there is 1 tree! Bare Sand Island lies off the coast of Darwin, a days sail away.
It is a turtle haven, where 4 species inhabit the waters around the island. Two nest on it, the pacific Ridley and the much larger Flatback. Flatbacks nest between April and September. In April 2001 a total of 254 females laid about 750 clutches on Bare Sand Island. This makes it one of the major nesting sites for this species in northern Australia!
Its not only turtles that inhabit the island, several birds of prey also cruise the beaches and skies in the hope of finding young turtles who have failed to reach the safety of the sea. These include brahminy kites, herons, beach stone-curlews and black-necked storks.
